I left behind school days that ran from 5:30 a.m. to midnight, and built my own way to learn.

I’m Leo, a high school student from a small town in China. Inside ChatGPT, I built Learning Lab and gave it one rule: after every session, re-read the whole conversation and check both my answers and its own teaching. With it, I relearned chemistry from almost zero. I passed the chemistry exam I needed to graduate 14 days after my first diagnostic.

My real school day. The gaps are the breaks.

I didn’t let that environment make me just like everyone else. I knew what suited me, even though I was definitely the odd one out.

For a long time, this was my day. Up at 5:30.

I often couldn’t follow the lessons.

Just as something started to make sense, the next class began. There was no time to practice.

Every evening, about two hours of exams.

Bad results, again and again, on things I hadn’t learned yet.

Classes and study hall until 10:30 p.m.

Not asleep until around midnight.

Classes on Saturday, exams all day Sunday. Just two and a half days off a month.

This isn’t just my story.

Classes and exams fill the whole day, and there’s rarely time to work out what you didn’t understand.

I tried to adapt. This way of learning didn’t suit me.

In my final year, I stopped going to class and studied at home. The exams were still ahead.

No one around me supported it.

What I wanted most was to breathe freely and walk out of a life where even my time wasn’t my own. I wanted my questions taken seriously and my situation taken into account. I wanted real progress, and hope.

Leaving school made me a sunnier person. The day still had twenty-four hours, but now I learned at my own pace and lived the way I chose.

Nothing yet proved this path would work. So I built a place where my questions would be taken seriously: Learning Lab.

Same Smoke

Made during the transboundary haze over Singapore and Malaysia. Scattered news merges into “the same smoke,” then five time scales carry it, step by step, into the body. No narration. English came first, then Chinese and Malay.
